In Memoriam: Lena Kourkoutis

MSA sadly announces the passing of Lena Kourkoutis, age 44, Associate Professor at Cornell’s School of Applied and Engineering Physics. She delved into biological cryo-EM as a Humboldt Research Fellow in the Molecular Structural Biology Group at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry (Baumeister Lab). She combined materials techniques with cryo techniques and did cryo-EM (a STEM pioneer) of materials for energy applications, as well as materials that displayed unusual quantum properties at low temperatures.
