In Memoriam: John Silcox
Our colleague, friend, and former President of the Microscopy Society of America (MSA), John Silcox passed away in Ithaca, New York on April 25th of this year. John was a long standing member of MSA and received the 1996 Distinguished Scientist Award in physical sciences from MSA. In addition to his numerous roles in MSA and at Cornell University's School of Applied and Engineering Physics, from which he retired in 2009 after 48 years, John served on the Solid State Sciences Committee of the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council from 1978-82. He was a member and chair of the Materials Research Advisory Committee for the National Science Foundation, co-chair of the NSF Panel on High Resolution Electron Microscopy and on the Advisory Committee to the Arizona State University and the Electron Microscopy Center for Materials Science at Argonne National Laboratory. He was a fellow of the American Physical Society and while at Cornell, held numerous leadership roles, including: Division Director, Director of the Cornell Materials Science Center, Vice Provost for Research for Physical Sciences and Engineering and Director of the Cornell Nanoscale Facility.
