MSA Webinar - StC Presents - Ethics and Image Manipulation in Science with Elisabeth Bik
- Price: FREE
Scientific knowledge is cumulative, with each new scientific advancement based on one that preceded it, leading to a progressively deeper understanding. Yet, even after peer-review and publication, science papers often contain questionable data and images of concern. If not addressed post-publication, papers containing incorrect and falsified data may lead to wasted investments from funders, as well as, wasted time spent by other scientists trying to replicate those results.
Dr. Elisabeth Bik, a microbiologist and science integrity consultant who has been called “the public face of image sleuthing”, is an image forensics detective who left industry to search for and to report biomedical articles that contain errors or data of concern. She has become a leading figure in image manipulation detection, renowned for her thorough investigations and dedication to ethical scientific practices. According to her Science Integrity Digest, Dr. Bik’s work has resulted in 1331 retractions, 1,074 corrections, and 215 expressions of concern (December 2024).
In her webinar, Dr. Bik will present her work and show several types of inappropriately duplicated images and other examples of research misconduct. In addition, she will offer an overview on how to report suspected scientific papers of concern, plus offer how journal and institutional leadership investigate these allegations. Other key points include:
- Understanding the scale and consequences of image manipulation in research
- The impact of high-profile cases on the scientific community and public trust
- Methods of distinguishing fake and flawed research
- Actionable advice for researchers to uphold ethical practices and mentor the next generation
Register today to learn more about the importance of science ethics versus image & data manipulation and the consequences for research integrity from an expert in the field, Dr. Elizabeth Bik.
