Description: The Stanford Nanocharacterization Laboratory invites applications for a research staff position to operate a Titan 80-300 environmental TEM with Cs image corrector. The microscope is being installed in June 2010 in Stanford's newly built Center for Nanoscale Science building and is part of a user facility, including other electron beam, x-ray, and surface science instrumentation. Responsibilities include operation of and optimizing performance of the ETEM, training users, and engaging in research activities related to the microscope capabilities.
Qualifications: Applicants should hold a Ph.D in Materials Science, or related discipline. The successful candidate will have at least 2-5 years experience with transmission electron microscopes, with specific experience in advanced capabilities such as aberration corrected imaging, EELS/GIF, and/or environmental studies. The ability to interact with and train graduate students in the use of sophisticated instrumentation, along with overall good communication and teamwork skills, is essential. Experience with other characterization instrumentation and techniques is recommended. Description: Tyco Electronics currently has an opening for a Staff Scientist position in the Technology Division at our Menlo Park, CA Polymer, Ceramics, and Technical Services laboratories for a candidate with experience in materials characterization and development utilizing Scanning Electron Microscopy, powder X-Ray Diffraction, and other solid state analytical techniques. The successful candidate will contribute to the development and in depth analysis of polymers, ceramics, metals, and composites for electronics, optics, displays, and sensors. As a member of the materials characterization group, in addition to supporting materials research, the scientist will provide expertise and hands on experimentation in materials analysis to support failure analysis, product development, and manufacturing support. Responsibilities include design of experiments, sample preparation, and analysis using state of the art techniques in SEM with EDX and EBSD, XRD, and other solid state techniques, working with cross-functional teams in development and problem solving, documenting technical results in written reports, presenting results at team and customer meetings, and maintaining instrumentation and state of the art analysis facilities.
Qualifications: Ph.D. in Materials Science or related field with in depth experience utilizing SEM, XRD, and other solid state analytical techniques is essential. Special consideration will be given to individuals with experience in one or more of the following: Optical Microscopy, Profilometry, TEM, specialized specimen preparation techniques. Excellent time management, written and verbal communication, and presentation skills are also required.

We are looking for a dedicated technologist who takes pride in the meticulous preparation of specimens for electron microscopic evaluation by pathologists using the laboratory's approved procedures and protocols (i.e., collect and receive specimens, log patient data into computer, prepare and distribute specimens appropriately.)
Must demonstrate technical expertise in performing all aspects of electron microscopy, including processing, sectioning, staining slides and 3mm grids, and loading EM scope. Will participate in support functions of the laboratory by preparing stains, reagents, files slides, blocks, and prints. Operate, calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment and instrumentation used in routine and specialized testing.
Qualifications:

Senior Research Associate - Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute-

The Senior Research Associate position will support imaging in the Orlando, FL (Lake Nona) facility in the Imaging Core. The Core is responsible for providing routine and advanced imaging capability to investigators. The core currently provides training and scientific advice pertinent to the usage of a Nikon A1R VAAS confocal platform, a Nikon inverted epifluorescent calcium-imaging and TIRF live-cell platform; an Olympus inverted epifluorescent platform, an Aperio Fluorescent Scanscope and an FEI Morgagni electron microscope. The individual will be responsible for routine aspects of the imaging core, maintenance, training of scientific staff, and troubleshooting, especially on transmission electron microscopy, confocal and epifluorescent live and fixed cell microscopy.
Qualifications:
The Senior Research Associate must have demonstrated ability to cooperate and work with others as demanded by the needs of a major research institute. S/he must be able to communicate effectively, demonstrate an interest in professional development, possess ability to define and resolve problems and be able to work independently.
Qualified candidates must have experience working in an imaging core operating a Transmission Electron Microscope, confocal microscope, and be familiar with imaging software (Volocity, NIS Elements, and Image-Pro). It is essential to have high proficiency in processing samples for use in TEM. Individual must have the ability to maintain complete and accurate records, data reports, and be responsible for billing services performed by the imaging core. Individual must operate and maintain complete documentation on all imaging core equipment, keep an adequate inventory of supplies, reagents and solutions, and dispose following proper regulations of any biohazard and potentially hazardous materials used in the core.

Senior Scientist
The primary purpose of this position is to drive advanced measurement techniques for micro and ultra structural imaging and measurement of products, substrates e.g. skin, as well as to build understanding through imaging of product-substrate interactions.
Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include maintaining and using the FEI Tecnai12 Twin transmission and Quanta 200 scanning electron microscopes and ancillary equipment; assisting investigators with sample preparation (TEM, ultra-thin sectioning of resin and frozen-sucrose-embedded samples, immuno-gold labeling, preparation and imagining DNA spreads, preparation and imagining of SEM samples); developing of protocols; problem solving; introducing Cryo-EM, electron tomography, and high pressure freezing/freeze substitution methods into the services offered by the lab, and other duties as might be assigned. Experience with software for tomographic reconstruction and for 3D reconstruction of EM serial sections is highly desirable. - A laboratory group devoted to the study of reservoir rocks at the micro- and nano-scale seeks an electron microbeam technician. Current projects focus on unconventional petroleum and CO2 sequestration reservoirs. The lab specializes in imaging of mineral components in fine-grained rocks by cathodoluminescence, BSE, and X-ray mapping by EDS, and imaging of nano-pore systems at very high-resolution using FEG secondary electron imaging.
Qualifications:
- The successful candidate will: manage and maintain an FEI XL 30 SEM and an FEI Nova NanoSEM 430, sample prep equipment including a C-evaporator, sputter-coater, two Ar-ion mills (Gatan and Leica), and polishing equipment; train users in use of all of the above; manage instrument scheduling, and assist research teams with data collection.

Laboratory Research Associate II

- Duties include assisting with the responsibilities for the day-to-day operation of our recently thoroughly-updated core facility for electron microscopy that serves the City of Hope research community. Expertise in resin embedding, thin sectioning, cryo sectioning, negative staining, critical point drying, sample coating, SEM and/or TEM operation, preparation of buffers, solutions, grids, etc., and a willingness to accept other duties as might be assigned is essential. Familiarity with various other methods including collecting images for cryo-EM, EM tomography, image analysis (Explore3D and Amira), high pressure freezing, freeze substitution, immunogold labeling is highly desirable.
Qualifications:
- This position requires a 1) Bachelor's degree plus 4 years of applicable experience, OR 2) A Master's degree and 2 years of applicable experience, OR 3) an equivalent combination of education and experience. The Research Associate II, without detailed supervision, may perform a wide variety of standard and non-standard procedures and may supervise others in the performance of these procedures. Level II Associates need an understanding of electron microscopy so that they can modify procedures to suit changing needs. The Research Associate II may make innovative contributions to the course of the research program and be actively involved in the interpretation of data.
